Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT?
A chiropractic adjustment is the art of introducing a specific force in a precise direction, applied to a vertebra that is subluxated or out of place. The Chiropractor identifies the location of the subluxation, determines the exact direction and the best way to correct the positioning. The adjustment itself is a movement of the spine that is done either by hand or with an instrument. The movement may be quick or may be undetectable with low force techniques. The adjustment assists the vertebra back into normal alignment and restores proper motion in order to relieve nerve interference.

HOW WILL THE ADJUSTMENT HELP ME?
Chiropractic adjustments help to eliminate nerve transmission interference that prevents your body from healing itself. Misaligned vertebrae interfere with your nervous system, which bring life messages to organs and muscles throughout your body. In a large way, your chiropractor removes or reduces the underlying problem, which then can alleviate painful symptoms.
A fun story... A chiropractor explained to a new patient that he had some big problems that would not be solved by one adjustment. He then pointed down to his own quite large belly which has expanded since his rugby days in school. He said this is my problem and it is not going to go away if I just exercise once or eat healthy when I feel like it. He said it would take regular work to solve his "problem" and even once it was solved, he would have to continue to work to keep the belly at bay.
Moral of the story... You can use us for usually quick results and end care or you can utilize Chiropractic care as a preventative form of health care. Once you have received our Dr.'s Report of Findings, we are very acceptive to whatever you choose. After all, we work for you!
WHAT IS A SUBLUXATION?
Your nerve system controls and powers every single part of your body. Not some ALL. (Would you say it's kind of important?) The main "cable" running from the brain (the "master control organ") is the spinal cord, and travels through the core of your spine. Nerve roots ("wires") branch off from the spinal cord and feed into every organ and cell of your body. A spinal bone (vertebra) which has lost its proper alignment relative to the rest of the spine can interfere with the proper flow of nerve signals to the body by irritating these nerves or spinal cord. This causes malfunction, and ultimately, disease. These misaligned vertebrae are termed subluxations, and adjusting them is your chiropractor's job. By the way, sometimes subluxations can cause pain in the back, (most do not).
WHAT CAUSES SUBLUXATIONS?
There are three basic causes of subluxations: physical traumas, emotional stresses, and chemical toxicities. Physical causes could include the birth process, slips, falls, accidents, sports injuries, repetitive motions and improper lifting. These traumas can actually push spinal vertebrae into a misaligned position.
Toxic or chemical causes could include alcohol, drugs, environmental toxins, vaccines, and poor diet.
Examples of emotional causes of subluxations are grouped under stressful conditions such as loss of loved one, loss of job, divorce, etc.
This emotional/toxic connection relates to the muscles of our back and how they are adversely affected during these high stress periods. Our primary spinal musculature holds and anchors our spinal bones in their proper positions.
Muscle weakness or imbalance from stress, as well as improper exercise or obesity, creates a condition known as myopathology whereby subluxations can occur.
CAN I ADJUST MYSELF?
No. Some people can make their joints "pop," but that's not an adjustment! Worse, damage can occur by INDISCRIMINATELY mobilizing a joint, causing ligaments to weaken. Chiropractic adjustments are specific and take years to master. Only the spinal joints that are "locked up" receive adjustments allowing weakened muscles, nerves, and ligaments to stabilize and heal.
WHAT CAUSES THE POPPING SOUND?
Lubricating fluids separate the bones of each spinal joint. Some adjusting methods can produce a sound when the gas and fluids in the joint shift. It's like opening a bottle of champagne or removing a suction cup. It is NOT the bones cracking! The sound is interesting, but it is not a guide to the quality or value of the adjustment.
CHILDREN CAN BENEFIT FROM CHIROPRACTIC TOO!
The normal birthing process places a tremendous amount of stress on the neck. If the baby's head presents in any other position than the baby's face is down, this can cause added stress. Any intervention such as vacuum or forceps causes additional trauma to the head and neck. Cesarean section is also considered a traumatic birth when considering the effects on the spine. Many obstetricians traction the head during a normal birth, using between 40 and 70 pounds of pressure, in order to birth the shoulder. This often causes damage to the cervical spine (neck) and the nerves that exit off the spine.
Even if you child came through the birth process without subluxations, they can be acquired afterwards. Babies neck muscles are weak and are unable to support the head. Infant car seats may be designed to protect a baby in the event of a crash, but they lack support of the neck. Whenever you stop and accelerate the car their heads go forward and back and side to side, which can cause vertebrae to subluxate.
Throughout the first year, a baby's spine will grow 50%. Whenever there is rapid growth, that is the time when things can go wrong. Regular chiropractic checkups ensure that your child's spine is growing properly. During the first year, they also develop the secondary curves of the spine in the neck and low back. If these curves fail to develop, there is a greater chance that they will develop scoliosis, or curvature of the spine and subsequent nerve damage.
Towards the end of the first year they will be learning how to walk and will fall an extraordinary amount of times. If you fell that often, do you think that your spine would feel the effects of the trauma?
As kids get older, they get even more active with more potential for physical trauma. And, if they play sports, that potential increases. And what about the child who sits at the computer or hunches over his hand-held game! Making sure that their spines are subluxation free means that your children can endure more physical stress with a lesser risk of injury.
Physical trauma is the most obvious reason kids need their spines checked out regularly, but emotional and toxic stress can also cause subluxations in kids. Many times children have accidents and parents may believe that they are fine because there is no external evidence of damage. Spinal subluxations sometimes don't signal an obvious symptom. The earlier children's spines are checked, the earlier problems can be detected, preventing health problems from occurring and becoming serious. We recommend all children be checked regularly for nerve interference, even without symptoms present.
Isn't it always easier to stay well rather than have to get well?
Emotional stress, another cause of vertebral subluxation, is becoming a bigger issue for kids today as they try to cope with common scenarios like divorce, violence, and peer pressure. Our world is also becoming more toxic with an increase in pollution, packaged foods, and the number of recommended vaccines. Toxic overload can stress the body and cause subluxations. Chiropractic can help children adapt to these stressors so that they can function at a higher level.
If you know a child who is NOT under chiropractic care and suffers from any of the following problems, it is our opinion, the basic fundamental underlying cause can be found from nerve interference at the spine. Please urge the child's parent to consider Chiropractic.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC CARE HELP PREGNANT WOMEN?
Wow so much to say, so little space. Usually it reduces labor time. In addition, with additional weight and stress on women’s bodies. Chiropractic treatment can help relieve pregnancy-related low back, leg and shoulder blade pain. It may also reduce incidences of headache and nausea. Many OB's refer their patients to our office because drugs are not advised during this period. Ask your chiropractor how much experience he or she has in treating pregnant women. We even have a special pregnancy table designed so you can lie face down without any pressure at all on your tummy.
IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE ADDICTIVE?
NO! What we often see is that people become aware of how their body should think and feel when they are subluxation free. When subluxated, they feel different and this becomes unacceptable to them. Chiropractic is part of a healthy lifestyle and is a proactive health care CHOICE. Just as daily habits of brushing your teeth, choosing to eat well and regular exercise would not be considered addictive, but lifestyle choices.
WILL INSURANCE COVER CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
Most insurance policies have some chiropractic benefits. Send us your information and we will be glad to let you know ahead of time all about how it relates to our exact services. Having your insurance company pay for a portion of your chiropractic care is certainly nice, but don't let it dictate your care! Don't allow the profit of a huge corporation to make the decision for you. Your health affects everything you do, say, or think. It is your most valuable possession. Yet, each of us is free to place a different value on our health.
Does your insurance company pay for your health club membership? Or bottled water? How about organic food? Your vitamins and supplements? Car repairs? Probably not, yet many people choose to pay for these items out of pocket because they believe that they will contribute to their overall health and well-being. Many people are becoming educated on how chiropractic can also significantly contribute to their health and choose to receive regular care, regardless of insurance coverage.
MY INSURANCE ONLY PAYS FOR SOME VISITS; YOU RECOMMENDED MORE? THEY MUST BASE THEIR NUMBER ON SOME SCIENTIFIC REASONING. WHAT'S YOURS? CAN I TRUST YOU? I'M CONFUSED.
I will accept all chiropractic cases regardless of your financial ability to pay. If there is a financial crisis we will ALWAYS offer you options so an equal exchange can take place. Then I believe you will "leave with a smile."
In this office, we believe you are entitled to the care you need, not what your insurance policy pays for. Many policies are created with "crisis" care in mind, that is, as with the medical model, once the symptom is gone, you're done. As we've explained, there's a lot more to getting you well than just treating your symptoms. Unfortunately, most insurance today isn't set up to accommodate this kind of health care. It is much more disease-care oriented. I've always been amused by the term preventative medicine when in fact it usually refers to early disease detection.
WHY FIX IT IF IT'S NOT BROKEN?
A big misconception is that chiropractic care is just for pain relief after an accident or after years of increased damage to the body. You wouldn't want to see a dentist after getting a tooth decay and you wouldn't change your oil after the engine is blown.
A key point to drive home is that an absence of pain does not mean good health. Regular visits with adjustments or any other service with a chiropractor has reported increased energy, better flexibility, decreased muscle tension, and a greater overall well-being.
As a chiropractor in Bayonne, Dr. Paul Roses, uses non-invasive and natural methods to relieve pain and to remove the root cause of it as well.
WHY SO MANY VISITS?
Have you ever had braces on your teeth, or known someone who has? How long did it take to achieve a corrected, straight set of teeth? 2 years? 3 years? Maybe 4? Then some have to wear a glued in retainer for life! And that's for a nice smile. The Good news is, the time it takes to achieve a correction in your spine is a "drop in the bucket" compared to the orthodontist. With teeth, constant, steady pressure over time is what initially corrects them back to normal. The same holds true for the spine. A big difference is with chiropractic your now allowed to function more normal, which clearly equals better health and a better life! Better yet, it only takes a few minutes for a normal visit.
You must remember that the body WANTS to be healthy and subluxation-free. However, it is much like a tug of war between how your muscles, ligaments and tendons of your spine that have been out of position, likely for quite some time.
The adjustment gently pushes the bone in the right direction. Then with reinforcement on a regular basis (to prevent of the vertebra back to its original position) the spine achieves a state of correction, and your body is able to restored its health, because all is returned to normal : )
A subluxation (a vertebra out of normal alignment interfering with nerves) is like any other injury. It involves pulled, stretched or torn muscles and ligaments, and, in severe cases such as automobile injury, even ruptured joints. This takes time to heal. Studies show that damage to the nerves themselves takes even longer. Problem is, many times, this healing process is complicated or prolonged by old injuries, arthritis, age, improper nutrition, less than adequate exercise--and the real "biggie"- STRESS. These cause minor "reinjuries", which can slow down healing. Also, remember: your spinal muscle has an actual physical memory, which has become used to a certain position of the spine. To re-train this memory takes time and effort. But, consider this: since your LIFE-LINE (nerve system) is ultimately affected by your spinal condition, do you think it's worth the effort.
IS IT TRUE THAT CHIROPRACTORS DO NOT PRESCRIBE MEDICATION OR PERFORM SURGERY?
Yes. Chiropractors don’t prescribe medication or perform invasive procedures. They believe the body has the ability to heal itself, and therefore focus on providing it with the right elements for self-restoration. This makes chiropractic one of the safest of all treatments.
CAN A PERSON WHO HAD BACK SURGERY SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?
Yes. It’s an unfortunate fact that up to half of those who had spinal surgery discover a return of their original symptoms months or years later. They then face the prospect of additional surgery. This too common occurrence is known as “Failed Back Surgery Syndrome.” Chiropractic may help prevent repeated back surgeries. In fact, if chiropractic care is initially utilized back surgery can often be avoided in the first place.
DOES CHIROPRACTIC WORK FOR ALL TYPES OF HEALTH PROBLEM?
I understand your goal may be to treat a pain or condition. However chiropractic care is successful with a very wide variety of health problems not necessarily considered “back” problems because our objective is to allow improved nerve system function. When a normal nerve supply is restored by removing interference the body’s natural healing capacity can improve a variety of health problems, making you a very satisfied person.
WHAT TYPE OF EDUCATION DO CHIROPRACTIC DOCTORS RECEIVE?
Doctors of Chiropractic are well-educated. Chiropractic education and medical education are similar in many respects and different in others because medical doctors do not correct vertebral subluxations and chiropractors do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery. After graduating with a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) Degree, each candidate passes the demanding four part National Board Examinations. Then, doctors apply to a governmental or professional licensing board and pass a still more difficult test before being granted the privilege to practice. A chiropractor’s education, however, never ends. Most doctors complete regular postgraduate instruction for license renewal and to stay current on the latest research and adjustment techniques.
HOW COME I FIND MYSELF NOT REFERRING TO YOU AS MY PRIMARY CARE DOCTOR?
As a patient relatively new to this office, and possibly to chiropractic in general, this is understandable. Diseases such as asthma, allergies, ear infections, stomach issues, inability to become pregnant, etc. and other chronic problems are not seen as chiropractic concerns until a person becomes a chiropractic patient. Most people growing up in this country are trained to go to the medical doctor when they have a symptom or health problem. However, once our patients realize what chiropractic is all about and how it helps in getting, and keeping, them well, we do in fact become the primary care giver, and find people consulting us before going in for non emergency medical treatment.
Do you realize that in parts of the world doctors are paid only for the service of keeping their patients healthy? If you get sick under this health plan, then, it indicates that something went wrong with the program, and the patient is treated until well again, at NO CHARGE.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN I'M DONE?
Basically, your body exhibits certain signs which alert me that your spine is stabilized and healing. Practical experience (from previous cases such as yours), plus routine clinical examinations, re-examinations, x-rays, and harmless Infrared Titron scans all signal as to your progress. I will be constantly keeping you informed as to how you're doing.
A LITTLE SECRET: Don't let symptoms, or the absence of them, be your guide as to how you are doing. Many cancer patients never have a symptom until the first tumor is detected. By then, for many, it is already too late.
I FEEL GREAT I THINK I'M CURED!
Cancer and heart disease are leading causes of death in America. Ever wonder just how long these people were sick before they actually began to feel bad form the disease? Ever hear of someone who never had a sick day in his or her life drop dead from a heart attack, stroke, or some other sudden illness? Unfortunately, many folks today are walking "time bombs"... they are on the verge of collapse. Yet, at present they feel "just fine." Many automobiles that "ran just great" yesterday sit in the engine overhaul shop today due to an overlooked maintenance item.
It's wonderful when you are feeling better. Please share that with us!! Just don't make the mistake of letting the symptoms "be your guide." Many sudden health crises today could have been prevented yesterday. It's a shame so many settle for less health than they deserve.
I FEEL WORSE. HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS IS WORKING?
This rarely happens. However, when you begin an exercise program after years of non-activity, how are you going to feel a few days after your first workout? Maybe a bit sore? The body responds this way to healing change as well. Correcting subluxations allows changes the structure of the spine and also opens up nerve pathways that may have been obstructed for years. This usually lasts no more than a day or two. We will, however, monitor your progress and if we have a concern other than this we will certainly let you know.
Most chiropractic adjustments are painless; in fact, the adjustment usually feels good and can be instantly relieving. In the mean time be patient: You are moving in the "right direction."
WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER DOCTORS?
In essence, what differs is my objective, or purpose. Conventional medicine today has as its goal the relief of symptoms. This is done using drugs, surgery and any other method which effectively accomplishes this goal. Chiropractic is different. My goal is to allow your body to function at its maximum potential by getting to the cause of your problem. At the core of chiropractic is the removal of interference to your nervous system, through spinal adjustments, because nerves control, power, and heal every part of your body.
An example: You have a neglected plant which is dying and turning brown. Treat the symptom by adding plant food to the soil (medicine). It seems ok, for awhile. But the plant will still die. Treat the CAUSE by turning on the water supply. The result? It's obvious!
WHY IS IT THAT SOME CHIROPRACTORS DON'T THINK ALIKE??
Do all medical doctors or dentists think alike? How many people in general deal with problems in the same way? Each of us approaches problems from our own unique perspective. There are alone dozens of chiropractic techniques: each designed to effectively treat different patients as the individual doctor sees fit. And, in the hands of a highly trained doctor, they all work. I, as your doctor would not be as competent utilizing the method of another chiropractor as I am practicing the technique that I have chosen to use. I feel I am the best at what I do, and believe I have probably given more adjustments than anyone currently in a practice in New Jersey. If you are not responding to my care I will definitely refer you to another chiropractor with a different approach. I know that chiropracTIC works but sometimes the chiropracTOR can fail.
WHY WOULD MY "REAL DOCTOR" BE DEAD SET AGAINST ME GOING TO A CHIROPRACTOR?
I always like to believe they must have a legitimate reason for such a judgment. Therefore, if he or she feels that way you should INSIST on a personal telephone conversation between the both of us regarding your chiropractic care. It is about YOU and you are all that matters. If they refuse, it should tell you that YOUR health is not their issue, but more likely prejudices they harbor. After all, most non chiropractors have very little understanding of our methods of assessing just what you may need or the techniques used to apply our care. We all want what is best for you and in my opinion the optimum way is to have a pleasant chat with your physician. More and more medical doctors today do understand the importance of chiropractic spinal care, but sadly, many are still of the mindset that the body is best treated by drugs and surgery. Unfortunately, there is an economic side to this issue as well: if your body is getting well under natural chiropractic care, you are buying less drugs and requiring less other forms of medical care as well. Understand that drugs are a multi-BILLION dollar industry in our country, and anyone who espouses to heal without using their products risks rocking the proverbial boat. It's not good business. Sad, but true.
Another reason for a negative attitude exhibited by a physician is that many doctors have never had anyone explain chiropractic to them. That's why it's so important we speak about your situation.
Try this: If a physician tells you anything disparaging about chiropractic, just ask him or her: "Exactly what is chiropractic, and what does a chiropractor do?What is a spinal subluxation"? The answer to that question will tell you plenty. Your doctor in most cases is sincere and has your well-being in mind. Many times, though, they have just been misinformed regarding chiropractic.
You may not know that in Europe many doctors are referring to chiropractors and doing research into chiropractic. One article published in "Manual Medicine" recommended that all children be checked for subluxations by a chiropractor after birth!!! Usually, a month doesn't pass without a referral from a medical doctor in our practice.
IS THERE MORE TO CHIROPRACTIC THAN LOW BACK PAIN AND WHIPLASH INJURIES?
You bet. As a matter of fact, back pain is merely the "tip of the iceberg", usually indicating deeper nerve problems. In years past, people with all imaginable ailments-stomach problems, menstrual difficulties, asthma, blood disease, ringing in the ears, irritability, mood swings, bursitis, arthritis, fatigue, anxiety, high blood pressure-and many, many other difficulties sought the services of chiropractors, and got well.
As a fetus, did you need a doctor for the nine months it took inside your mother's womb? That wisdom inside you just does not disappear after you are born.
IS CHIROPRACTIC SAFE?
Yes! Specific chiropractic adjustments are very safe since care is individually based only after a complete health history and chiropractic examination has been performed.
A pediatric population study was performed from 1977 to 1998 and found the risk to neurological or vascular complications from chiropractic care to be 1/250 million. It is important to compare this with something like the risk of serious adverse injury from simply taking aspirin at 4/1000. (Pistolese R. JVSR 2(2) 1998)
A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are "remarkably safe." Because so many patients have avoided drugs and risky surgery, and have found wonderful relief, chiropractic enjoys an excellent track record. Presently the cumulative risk from the professions who manipulate and adjust is approximated at between 1/3 million to 1/500,000. Also consider that chiropractic malpractice insurance rates are a fraction of those for medical doctors. These rates are based simply on risk.
